Location
This photo was taken in Italy, in the Piedmont countrysideTime
To make this shot I got up at 5.30 in the morning and at 7.30 I was there. It's important to be in place very early to avoid being seen by animals. I knew that in this area there were some buzzards fighting for territorial supremacy in fact, on the same day, I was able to photograph 8 different buzzards. In the case of this image the two buzzards fight for prey. The rat had been hunted by the animal on the right but as soon as it arrived on the roost the other buzzard arrived in a swoop trying to steal it. The fight lasted several minutes and finally a third buzzard stole the preyLighting
The light at that moment was particular. There was a warm light in the undergrowth as the sunlight was filtered by the branches of the plants, at the same time you could see the blue sky in the background creating a nice contrast of warm / cold lightEquipment
For this shot i used a Nikon D500 with a Sigma 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM S and Gitzo tripod with Photoseiki TB-101 headInspiration
I knew that there would be an opportunity to make a similar shot but I didn't think I could have both animals so well exposed. The wait rewarded me!Editing
Shooting always in raw, this gives me the opportunity to better develop the shots in post-production. In this shot it was not necessary a great post-production work. The light was already fantastic and I didn't have to correct it a lot. Sharpness, contrast, luminance, saturation and a few other slight adjustments gave this final resultIn my camera bag
Normally my backpack is not very light... I have a Nikon D4s, Nikon D610 and Nikon D500. About lens i have: Tamron 15-30 SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD, Tamron 24-70 SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD, Sigma 70-200 F/2.8-AF EX DG OS HSM, Sigma 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM S. Also in the backpack I always carry spare batteries, cleaning kit, various filters, covers and camouflage cloth, 2 torches and 2 remote shotsFeedback
To do nature photography I always suggest to study the behaviors of the animals you want to photograph. Migration or mating periods, feeding and preferred habitat must be absolutely known by the photographer. Having done this you need a lot of patience and free time. Sometimes you don't do any shoot for all the day and then everything happens in 5 minutes ... the animals are unpredictable but they are beautiful for this too
