I snapped this photo on a whim during a drive through the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Alton, Illinois in late Fall of 2017. The trails were packed with photographers lined up shoulder to shoulder capture images of the birds. I spotted this marshy area, hopped out of the car, and focused my attention on the withering grass and weeds scattered about.Time
It was getting late in the day when I snapped this photo. The field was illuminated by that gorgeous golden hour light that fills the air as the sun dips low in the sky in the Fall.Lighting
For me, the lighting makes this photo!! The golden light from the setting sun was the perfect compliment to the brown and gold tones of the dying grass and plant life. It just wouldn’t have been as dynamic without it.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5000 and 50mm lens for this photo. When I’m bringing my camera along to photograph sights, I travel as light as possible.Inspiration
The beautiful light was my only inspiration for this photo.Editing
This photo was cropped in Lightroom. I typically bring down the black points a smidge and I may have adjusted the tone curve a bit, as well. This particular photo was stunning straight out of the camera, so not much was done to it in terms of post-processing.In my camera bag
These days I shoot with a NikonD750, typically with a 50mm lens attached. Lately, I’ve been bringing along the Tokina 100 f/2.8 macro lens in my bag as I’ve really started enjoying macro photography recently.Feedback
Keep your eyes open and see the light! See from what direction it is coming and choose the angle that best allows the light to drench the frame without overwhelming the shot. For this shot, I moved completely away from the popular shooting area and ventured into territory that was isolated. Don’t be afraid of the unconventional.
