Location
This photo was taken in a farmer's field just before plowing it under. The photo was taken in Utah, USA during the fall.Time
Early evening just before sundown.Lighting
I intentionally placed the little boy with the light at his back to get a gentle rim light around his body. I wanted everything to be soft so I chose a slightly overcast day.Equipment
Nikon D800 with a 200mm 1.8 lens.Inspiration
The vintage Alice Chalmers tractor was my inspiration. I new that I wanted to have a little boy playing in a field as if he were hoping to someday get to drive the tractor.Editing
Yes, I touched up the lighting and softened the background a bit. I also edited out a few artifacts that were distracting to the story. (Strings dangling from the hat, wheat covering the tractor etc...)In my camera bag
Nikon D800, 85 mm prime lens, reflector, extra batteries, clips, white balance card.Feedback
Plan your poses in advance! Children have a short window in which they stay 'happy' during a shoot. You have 20 minutes to capture them. Also, I purposely hid the tractor from him until I was exactly ready to shoot the shutter because I wanted him to explore the new toy with fresh eyes. I didn't want him to already become bored with it before I had a chance to capture his curiosity.
