Location
This photo was taken at Portobello Beach in Edinburgh. I am very lucky to live in such a great city. It's full of character and history and is a photographer's delight. I don't have a dog of my own, but I sometimes like to take my family's or friend's dog for a walk along the beach with my camera.Time
Taken early afternoon when the sun is behind al the house and homes on the promenade.Lighting
The sun was behind the houses and buildings in this shot, so the door and subject were in shadow.Equipment
I used my Canon Powershot SX720 because it's easy to carry. I can use one hand to take a quick photo if I see it and it's discreet if a situation arises.Inspiration
I loved the character and colours of the door in the image. The dog sat down by the door to wait for me as I stopped to inspect it. It was at that time I realised the potential for a photo. The patterns in the wooden door and the knots in the wood also make it interesting to look at. The stick didn't belong to the dog. It was there already so I kept it in the shot.Editing
The only thing I needed to do was add a little contrast and saturation. Not much was needed for this shot.In my camera bag
I usually carry extra batteries, charger, camera, case and a bag for props if I need them.Feedback
Always look closely at objects and particularly the ground. You may find something small that is of interest and would make for a good photograph. I always look for shadows and reflections. I love to go out the day after a rainy day, when the sun is shining. You can find many puddles that create interesting reflections. If you have one, carry a small, compact camera for quick shots too! I have the Canon Powershot SX720 which is a great size and weight and can easily fit in your pocket. So convenient!
