Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Acadia National Park in Maine. I had been to Acadia as a kid with my family and I always wanted to go back. My wife, who is from Illinois, had never been to Maine before. We decided to go to Acadia on our 25th anniversary. To get to this specific waterfall we had to hike in about 3 miles. It was really worth the effort.

Time

We started our hike to the waterfall about 11am. It was raining quite steadily. Not a heavy downpour but enough to slow us down. It was well after noon when we reached the location. It was still raining and quite overcast by the time I made the exposure, sometime after 1pm.

Lighting

Actually, I was quite lucky that it was heavily overcast which allowed me to use a longer shutter speed. I did not have an ND filter and the actually image was slightly overexposed. Shooting it in the RAW format gave me the ability to bring the exposure down when processing.

Equipment

This image was shot with my Nikon D90 and a Sigma 17-70 2.8 zoom lens mounted on my older Velbon tripod.

Inspiration

This image was inspired by a photo my roommate took in college and had mounted and framed on our wall of our kitchen. He was a photography major and was couple years ahead of me in school. He had shot his image in Kodachrome and had printed it as a Cibachrome print. I have always loved the colors of Cibachrome prints.

Editing

My post-processing was mostly to get the over-exposure corrected and capture the colors as I remembered them. I think it was probably at least 2 stops over-exposed. I am glad that I shot it in the RAW format.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a wide-angle zoom of some kind. In this case it was a 17-70mm Sigma, which is a great lens. I also carry a 80mm macro that I use for portraits and close ups. Since this photo was taken I have moved to a full-frame Sony A7r system. I use an adapter to mount my Sigma 17-70mm on the Sony. I also have a number of Sony prime lenses, a 55mm and a 90mm macro. If I'm in nature I always have a tripod. If I'm in the city I always have a flash.

Feedback

I now carry a variable ND filter to allow for long exposures. I think that is the only way you can do long exposure in full sun. Again, I was lucky it was such a dark day which allowed me to use a slower shutter speed. Still, it was over-exposed. I bracketed the shot quite a bit to make sure I had an image I could work with.
