Location
We were staying at Savuti Camp in Chobe National Park in Botswana. The photo was taken at one of the waterholes nearby.Time
Our daily routine was to head out at first light and then another game drive in the late afternoon. This is the best time of day for game viewing. On this particular day, when we arrived at the waterhole there were thousands of zebra in long lines coming to drink. We ended up staying for a magical day of sightings watching zebra splash in the water, fight and the young ones sleep. All day other animals came to drink, like this male bull. All of a sudden the elephant bull appeared out of the bush, silently, and after drinking gallons of water disappeared again within moments. With the sun on his face he turned to look directly at me, on his way back to the bush. The photo was taken on 27 April, 2016 at 3:45pm.Lighting
The light was still quite harsh at this time of the day. Shooting a dark subject with the shadows towards me, I found difficult to get the exposure right.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon EOS 7D Mark II with a 70-300mm lens, using a Badger bean bag to rest the camera on.Inspiration
Elephants are my favourite animal. They are magnificent creatures in stature and behaviour. I love to photograph them and particularly love black and white photos.Editing
The colour images of this elephant didn't 'grab' me, so using Lightroom I converted the photo to black and white. I love the effect of the sun hitting the elephants face, lighting it up against his dark body.In my camera bag
I normally shoot with a Canon EOS 450D but my husband had been medically evacuated from the bush so I was using his camera. I have a 70-300mm and a 17-85mm lens and travel with a Badger bean bag and Gorilla tripod. I also have just been given the newly released Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (WG) !Feedback
Wildlife photography is about being patient and being ready. Some days animal sightings are minimal and other days, like this one, there are many scenes to choose from. The scene can change quickly so it is worthwhile having your camera ready and making sure the settings are correct, if they have been changed. Even though elephants look like they walk slowly, they will be past you quickly when they are close.
