Behind The Lens

Location

This was at Duxford Airshow, the year they boasted the most Spitfires and Hurricanes all in one place since the war.

Time

Duxford always put on a good show. It's just sometimes difficult to make a good photo because you end up facing South and straight into the sun. I captured this one just as a group of Spitfires slipped into a dive, just out of the way of the bright sunlight in front of me.

Lighting

Natural light. Shooting into the sun. Never a good idea if you have a choice!

Equipment

The camera I use is a micro four thirds Lumix GX7 with an Olympus 14-150mm lens. It's a lovely, light camera that packs a massive punch. Hand held, as ever.

Inspiration

The Spitfire is an iconic aircraft. It's an aircraft that has become part of family history too. One of the Spitfires flying that day was identified as one of the aircraft my mother worked on as a WAAF mechanic in the early 1940's. Just incredible to see it still flying!

Editing

Post processing? A tiny little crop just to centre the composition. Nothing else needed really.

In my camera bag

In my bag...Lumix GX7 camera, small and light with a big punch. A Lumix 14-45mm lens as standard. An Olympus 14-150 lens which seems to be incredibly versatile. Spare batteries, polarising fliter, spare SD cards, phone, wallet, packet of mints, bottle of water....With a camera as small and powerful as this, there's always lots of room in my bag.

Choose the right lens. Choose a fast shutter speed. Keep shooting and be prepared to miss now and again. That's life!
