I met Stanley at the airport. He was uncomfortable and seemed troubled, so I chatted with him for awhile. He told me how he hates to fly, but he really loves his family and flying is a requirement to be with them. I asked if I could take his picture and in saying 'yes', he assured me he didn't always frown as he proceeded to tell me again about his dislike of flying.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while sitting at the airport waiting for an over flight.

Time

I remember sitting in the airport at midday watching this gentleman who was clearly agitated with the delay. He told me how he loves seeing his family, but has a hard time with flying given his age. He apologized saying the he is usually a happy man, but flying is distressing for him.

Lighting

Sitting in the airport at the end of a terminal, we had natural light streaming in from all directions. Sitting in the middle of the terminal, the light was defused.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 6D with a Canon EF f/2.8 100mm IS USM macro lens. I used no flash as the ambient light was beautiful.

Inspiration

I love falling in love with the world through my lens. Sitting there in the airport after such a wonderful week, I saw this man and his wife and felt the need to know his story. After capturing this moment, I talked with he and his wife over coffee. The world is a beautiful place when you take the time to interact with what you are capturing.

Editing

The only processing was some tone and contrast adjustment in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon 6D, a a variety of Canon lenses. My usual lineup is a 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8, and 16-35mm f/4 IS USM. On this occasion I was carrying a 100mm macro and chose to use it as a portrait lens to capture more detail in the man's face. I also carry a travel tripod, remote shutter release, two extra batteries, a 10-stop and 6-stop ND filter, a polarizer filter and headphones (I do a lot of night photography and listening to classical music has become an awakening of beauty for me).

Feedback

Be patient and let the moment happen rather than manipulating it. Had I worried about the right lens or bouncing the right flash, the moment and emotion would have been lost. Look for beauty and fall in love with the world through your lens.
