Location
Near an urban community in southern Minnesota is a beautiful hiking trail. At the end of one of the trails is this beautiful falls called Nerstrand Hidden Falls.Time
This is one of my favorite images. I was walking on this trail with my family on the Fourth of July. We came up on this beautiful falls and I immediately began shooting. My oldest son has shone a great deal of interest in photography and went scouting for different angles of the falls and found this one. He assured me that I should come to him as he had the best angle with the best light. He was right. This photo was taken mid afternoon, but with a big stopper neutral density filter.Lighting
After finding the prefect location, I put a neutral density filter on the lens to capture the falls so milky. Exposing the photo for two minutes with the big stopper filter brought about even more beautiful light.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 6D. The lens used was the Canon EF 17-40 with a 10 stop neutral density filter. I used a Manfrotto 055 tripod.Inspiration
I love water. Walking near a waterfalls the first thing one notices is the sound. I could sit near a falls and listen for hours. The same is true for me with the ocean - it's sitting and listening to the ocean that makes it majestic for me. With these falls, the light on a warm summer's day was the first thing I noticed and was so beautiful that I wanted to capture it from the best angle possible. It was a beautiful day spent with my beautiful wife and beautiful boys. It was a very good day that I wanted to capture and remember forever.Editing
The only thing I did in post-processing was clone a person out of the picture. Taking photos of waterfalls in the middle of the day is nearly impossible with people swarming the falls like ants on a piece of candy on the street. I don't blame the people a bit as it was warm that day and the water looked inviting. Cloning out one of the people didn't hurt the photo much.In my camera bag
I carry a wide angle lens (Canon EF 16-35 II), a macro lens (Canon EF 100 II) and a 50mm (Canon 1.4). I also carry three tripod brackets, a remote trigger release, two extra batteries, a polarizer filter, three neutral density filters, and lens cleaners. I sometimes carry a MeFoto backpacker tripod attached to the bottom of my bag.Feedback
Be patient. The light changes constantly under such a canopy of beautiful leaves. Don't be afraid to use a delayed shutter release in the middle of the day even when the light is beautiful without it. Finally, fall in love with the world all over again and you'll find beauty through your lens.
