Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture during my second travel in Namibia, a beautiful African country

Time

It was a late morning of August, winter time in the south emisphere. These young bushmen where telling us about their daily life, when they decided to show us how they are still hunting for food.

Lighting

Unfortunately, late morning may not be the best time of the day to take pictures, but I had no options. I therefore decided to adjust the white balance according to meet the strong african sun light and the reflection of the dry grass.

Equipment

This picture was taken 7 years ago, at that time I had a Nikon D90 and here I used my long zoom 70/300 mm. No tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

Actually, I was not sure to have opportunities to take an interesting picture. The light was not exceptional and, although it was very interesting to follow these guys, I had no real inspiration till they saw a Thompon's gazelle. At that moment they wanted to show us how to hunt and posinioned themselves in what I thought it was the right moment for a picture.

Editing

As I said before, the light was not the best, therefore I had to do some little editing. Mainly I had to give more contrast and avoid the extreme strong light of the dry grass.

In my camera bag

Now I changed my equipment and I am using the Nikon D600, a full frame camera, good enough for my hobby. Because of that, I had to change all my lenses and this is what I now have: all Nikor lenses 24/70mm f2,8 - 70/200mm f2,8 - 50mm f1,8 - 14mm f2,8.

Feedback

Rule No. 1 to take a good picture is "patience". Sometimes you may be lucky to have the right light and right subject quiet soon, sometimes you must wait for hours. Look for the right angle, try to put yourself in the best possible light and wait for the right moment to shot. Never forget that, a part a good technical knowledge, a bit of luck is also very helpful.
