Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home. We had a saltwater tank which had this gorgeous anemone and his best friend the clownfish. The photo was taken through the aquarium glass.

Time

I honestly don't remember. My metadata indicates it was 4am :) I guarantee that was not when I took it.

Lighting

The lighting is provided by the special aquarium lighting required to keep a salt water tank (particularly one with an anemone healthy and happy. It provides a wonderful daylight hue and makes the colours in the aquarium stand out beautifully.

Equipment

This picture was taken early in my photography life. I was shooting on a Pentax K-200D at the time. The lens was a Pentax-F 28-80mm F3.5-4.5.

Inspiration

I love aquariums and sea life. I think there are something lots of people do not get to see frequently so they are a great photographic opportunity to share. I really wanted to practice taking photos and getting better and it is easier to do that if you make your practice easier to fit into the day. Shoot things around you. Shoot things that are common. Shoot things that are rarer that you happen to be lucky enough to be near.

Editing

I was not yet at the point of being able to really do much post-processing. That came later on in my photographic path. This photo is pretty much au-natural.

In my camera bag

Since taking this photo my passion for photography has continued to grow. I now have accomplished a certificate of photography from a technical college and now know so much more than when I started. I have moved up to a Canon EOS80D which I carry around frequently. My favourite lenses are my 50mm prime and my 70-300 zoom. I never go anywhere with out my trusty iphone10 and therefore it is my default any time when I do not have my proper gear.

Feedback

Glass is difficult to shoot through. Reflections and lighting are huge challenges when shooting in aquariums. Stay level with what you want to capture and keep you lens flat to the glass. Shoot as wide open as you can as sea life if rarely still and therefore it is extremely important to shoot as fast as you can. The dim lighting in aquariums frequently makes this a challenging situation but keep that shutter speed as fast as you can.
