Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Birds of Prey bird sanctuary on Vancouver Island.

Time

It was near closing time so early evening which gave lots of beautiful indirect light.

Lighting

Nothing special about the lighting except what we all know = diffused lighting has a more favourable look.

Equipment

Canon T3i and a standard 75-250 kit lens.

Inspiration

I love taking nature shots but have trouble actually getting to see animals in their natural habit. I do love going to zoos and nature parks and trying to take shots that look natural. Many people say you can't take a good picture of an animal in captivity but it's all in the framing and the depth of field. I love the way he is looking right at the camera.

Editing

No post processing - this photo is all natural.

In my camera bag

Normally I have too much equipment in my bag. I am one of those photographers who is always afraid I will not have what I need and will then miss the perfect shot. It is a fine balance to carry enough to get the shot but not weigh yourself down. My goto's are my 18-55 and 75-250 zoom lenses.

Feedback

Don't let the idea of an animal in captivity stifle your creativity in shooting nature. Perspective is everything. Look for angles that work and try to capture areas of the landscape where you can not see that the animal is in an enclosure. You will be surprised how beautiful the shots can be and how natural they can look.
