Behind The Lens

Location

We were on a 16 night rafting trip down the Colorado River thru the Grand Canyon and camped one night on some ledges overlooking the river.

Time

It was just after sunset during the blue hour while we still had a little ambient light

Lighting

It was blue hour as the sun had already set early behind the canyon walls. There was still some ambient light so we lit a few candles around our tent and left a flashlight on inside to get our tent to glow.

Equipment

Nikon D700 with Nikkor 24-120mm f4 @ 46mm, f8, ISO 800, 30seconds, Tripod

Inspiration

The light during blue hour reflecting on the water and canyon walls created a very serene looking scene. I thought a long exposure of 30 seconds would add a sense of motion by letting the moving river blur slightly.

Editing

Some cropping and adjusted saturation, color balance, whites, blacks shadows, highlights, sharpening, noise reduction

Feedback

A wide angle fast lens is important given the declining light levels. A tripod was needed to steady the camera during the long 30 second exposure to get the water to blur
