We arrived in Ngorongoro Crater at sunrise and quickly drove to the opposite side of the caldera in search of a Black Rhino when there was an un-expected rain shower. The light rain seemed to excite the animals and they started to become more active and all of a sudden two Rhinos emerged from the grasses where they were laying down resting. They started wandering among a small herd of Zebras.

Behind The Lens

Location

While on Safari in Tanzania we spent a couple of days at the Ngorongoro Crater

Time

After a picnic lunch in the crater we headed out again exploring the far side of the crater in search of the Black Rhinos. We found two lying down but shortly after we arrived they got up and started slowly wandering into a group of zebras.

Lighting

The overcast cloudy skies provided a nice flat light

Equipment

Nikon D5 with a sigmas 10-600mm lens at 600mm shot at f7.1 and 1/2,500sec, with +.3evs handheld

Inspiration

The Rhinos wandering among the Zebras gave a good sense of the place within the crater

Editing

Due to the flat plain colors I thought converting the image to B&W would have more impact. I also cropped the image, adjusted blacks, whites and sharpening

In my camera bag

In the field I usually carry two bodies, one with a long lens and the other a wide lens.
