Location
This was shot across the bay from the San Diego skyline on Coronado island.Time
I hadn't planned on shooting that night, but at the last minute I had the idea to see if I could see the stars over the skyline. Met up with a friend and took the trip down south. We ended up setting up really late into the night and running the camera for almost an hour.Lighting
All ambient lighting on a moonless night.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D with a 17-40mm f/4 on a old trusty tripod. To trigger the camera I used TriggerTrap's star trail function on their mobile app. I shot a series of 30 second exposures.Inspiration
I saw a photo with stars over a city skyline and everyone told me it had to be photoshopped. I felt you could shoot star trails over a skyline if the conditions were right. Once again, I was told otherwise. I wanted to prove them wrong. I guess I'm just stubborn like that.Editing
Once the images were stacked and blended in photoshop, there wasn't much post processing done. I left all the plane trails that I normally would edit out, in, because I felt it added to the city feel. That and it would probably take forever to do.In my camera bag
Canon 1D3 and a few backup bodies. 70-200 f/2.8, 50 f/1.8, 17-40 f/4, 11-16 f/2.8.Feedback
You don't need anything extreme to get star trails. A simple wired remote with a locking button can get you there. Shoot a series of 30 second exposures and stack them in Photoshop. Otherwise its just a lot of waiting.
