Her husband owned the shop we stopped at in their village during a rest period on the third morning of trek in late September 1992. My travelling companions and I had gone over for bottles of pop cooled in a tub of water. They saw her working at her clay stove and pulled out their cameras. When she shrunk back into the shadows they shrugged and walked away. When it was just us, woman to woman, I caught her eye and raised my camera questioningly. She eased back into the light and gave me a rare privilege. I often wonder how her life went, with her husband and little boy, and their shop, selling old batteries and film, pop and bottled water to trekkers. The camera, by the way, was a Canon Photura - 10X zoom.
