Location

Meet Mango! Mango, is a 20-year-old male Syrian brown bear (close to extinction) of The Zoological Center Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan which has the largest collection of wildlife in human care in the Middle East. Mango recently had surgery to repair a slipped disc in his spine. He is fine and doing quite well. Bet you didnt know Syria had brown bears, did you? Well me either, until my daughter Liya, and my camera, and I went to the zoo in Israel! This foto and quite a few of my other animal shots were taken on this one trip. I was organizing my photography collection and thought to myself, hey I can work with this foto, why didnt i see that shot in that way before? Oh, the joys of looking thru the endless libraries of yesteryears fotos!

Lighting

Actually it was a nice balmy day, lots of breezes with groups of clouds overhead. Nice opportunities for various lighting situations.

Equipment

I have an old Nikon D70s, 177d 28-80mm Tamron, a 572D 70-300mm Tamron, and a 100mm prime Tokina. No Tripods were invovled or special lighting. Zoos are big places and require alot of walking, plus i had my daughter Liya with me who was about 4 at the time. You have to keep your eyes focused and attend to the little ones quite abit, so I like to keep my hands free as possible, still do.

Inspiration

Mango himself was just rolling around and having a great time shaking up his various surroundings, I had to get a few shots of this magnificent creature. I have a few other shots of him on my gallery here a Viewbug. Feel free to take a look.

Editing

Oh yes, post-processing for me is where most of the magic happens. I happen to use Lightroom and find it can really helped getting a little more brown/gold from Mango. Also i tend to try and have my crop for each shot i take already in mind, but often i dont have the time, Mango isnt going to do any takes over and over. So here in these action type shots i will often shoot wide with the subject in the center. Knowing full well I will be cropping the foto, usually in "Thirds", but sometimes i use the "Golden Ratio". It just depends on the content and your own gut instinct, and creativity. In this foto, I cropped out some of Mangos' "Props" and tried to get in more personal by coming in tighter to create a more "zeroed in" and conversational effect.

I have a few camera toys but not a lot. I have an old Nikon D70s, a 177d 28-80mm Tamron, a 572D 70-300mm Tamron, and a recently acquired 100mm prime Tokina from a good friend as a gift.

Feedback

Zoos are a great place to take fotos, some of the animals are real camera hams and just love interacting with people as part of their daily regime. Some u can touch and hold while others are not, like Mango in this foto....This is Obviously "His" tire. Some of these animals like Mango here are close to extinction and are watched over as close as possible and with as much care one could hope for. Also thank u all for the award of Peoples Choice in this, the "Tired Photo Challenge". Congratulations to the winner!
