The late afternoon sun reflects on the newly emerged leaves surrounding Big Creek, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC. The Big Creek area is essentially in early summer right now, with vibrantly green leaves everywhere. The 5.1 mile trail meanders along the creek shore, rarely departing from the edge of the water. Big Creek itself loses about 1250' over these 5.1 miles, creating cascade after cascade through large boulders and rocks. This particular picture was taken at sunset the night before I started a 50-mile backpacking trip through the park. Out of all the photos I took over the four days, this is one of my favorites.
