.....Meet the American Jackal ....The Spanish Fox .....it was also known as the Prairie Wolf before its Aztec name Coyōtl was popularized 200 years ago.
.....Their ancestral range once was contained strictly to a narrow band extending from the plains and southwest of the United States and the north central part of Mexico where it lived alongside Bison, Pronghorn and Prairie Dogs.
.....Interestingly the animal was held in high esteem in Indigenous Peoples folklore and was often kept as pets until they reached around 5 years of age.
.....They do not rely on packs or groups for survival but rather prefer to keep solitarily. Even More interesting is that a Coyote will kill face to face whereas the wolf hunting in a pack will kill from behind.
.....Another keen feature is that when hunting the coyote rather smartly searches for visual clues using its eyes, exactly in the manner as a Fox hunts.
....The coyote pictured here is a true Plains Coyote. From the coloring down to the physical traits. It is not slight gangly shadow of an animal popularized by media. Not at all, this is a healthy robust smart proud animal out exploring its range after a fire swept through the area. The heat still coming from the ground affected picture quality.
