Location
This photo was taken on “Look out Pass” in majestic Montana right after a very heavy Autumn Snow! It was so magical to walk in this unseasonal, Autumn fresh snowfall. This enchanting location with the fresh snowfall has become one of my top favorite travel memories!!Time
It was mid day and mostly overcast with a little sunlight peeking through. We had just pulled off from main highway to see a country road and actually got stuck in the snow! It ended up being a perfect place and time to capture it!Lighting
I was very fortunate to have such wonderful lighting with the overcast conditions and yet some sunlight peeking through. It really worked well especially with the sunlight over the leading lines of the Country Mountain Road. I didn’t use any extra lighting for this shot.Equipment
Even though I had already been shooting this scene with my large camera, for this one image, I decided to use my IPhone instead to see how it would turn out. I was using a tripod and after setting up focus, exposure and composition of the shot, I had someone else push the button after jumping into the scene with my dog.Inspiration
This unusual, heavy snowfall in October was like stepping into a storybook setting! I had never seen Fall Colors and Snow combined in such a breathtaking way before!!! So... I had to stop and try to capture dreamy feel of it. I also hoped by adding myself and my dog into the image frame, it might help portray a visual story of this amazing day!Editing
I used photoshop to process this image and bring up shadows, highlights and brighten the overall image. I also added an “orton effect” to create more of a glow and moody look.In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 6D, 24-70 2.8L Canon lens. 70-200 2.8L Canon lens IPhone external flash TripodFeedback
An important thing to remember when taking this type of image on an IPhone is to use your finger to press screen where ever the brightest part of the scene is (the sky) so you expose to capture the highlights and keep from blowing out your sky. Make sure you lock the exposure. You can always bring up the shadows and brighten it in processing later.
