Location
This shot was taken at the National Elk Refuge outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The scenery around Jackson Hole is so beautiful. The Elk Refuge, Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park are all in this area.Time
This was taken in the early evening before the setting sun had dipped behind the Teton mountains. The west to east facing sun provided enough light to take this shot handheld.Lighting
The lower angle of the sun gave nice shadows on the coyote.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon Z7 with an old manual focus Vivitar 120-600mm f5.6-8. The lens was set at 600mm f.8.Inspiration
I liked the minimalist look of this shot. I wanted to try and show the coyote's struggle to find food and survive during the long and harsh winter. I think the wide crop just showing the coyote and the expanse of snow drives home this struggle.Editing
The camera was set to auto white balance and originally was too blue. I adjusted the white balance and added some sharpening on the coyote. In my camera bag
My main camera is a Nikon Z7. Most of my shots are taken with either a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 or a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8.Feedback
Wildlife is abundant in the Jackson Hole area. I would recommend coming any time of year. The biggest hinderance to getting good shots will often come down to the length of you lens. The valley are vast and sometimes the animals are far from the road. Luckily, there are many excellent shots of wildlife that can be taken with mid zoom lenses.
