Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo downstairs in my basement! We were planing on doing some outdoor portraits. The weather had other plans. I went to work and worked with what I had. This is not my ideal backdrop, I knew however it would give me the extra light to pop these two beautiful people off the page.

Time

This was taken in September 29, at 6:29pm in Midland MI, downstairs in the basement of my house. It was cold and raining out so we decided to do the photos inside. Not the most ideal, but my dad and stepmom where leaving and I needed to get these photo's before they left for Florida. As my dad was turning 80 in December!

Lighting

I used some window light and some lights I had on in the room and my big Nikon SB-700 speed light that I was bouncing off my white ceiling.

Equipment

Nikon D-7200, lens 18-140mm, I did use a tripod because I tend to shake a little and I wanted a tack sharp image. My F-stop was 4.5 at 45mm and my ISO was at 640 to give just a little more light.

Inspiration

I was inspired by just having taking a class about posing couples and I wanted to see if it was worth it and it was! It was my dad's 80th birthday coming up in December and I wanted to take some photos for a gift for them both. I think they turned out ok given I had only a few minutes to set everything up. I know I wanted them sitting for some because my dad is 6'2 and my step mom is 5'2. I think this shot turned out well.

Editing

I just did a little on my mac. I try like heck to get most of it right in camera so I don't have to spend more time on the computer.

In my camera bag

I always have my wide angle 18-140, because its the one I use the most and my Nifty 50mm. I also have my diffusers for those extra bright situations. Cleaner for my lens and my speed-light.

Feedback

Do your homework for what your trying to capture and be prepared for anything! Give your models or whoever your working with good directions so they know what to do. Do not be afraid of being bold and taking control that's how you get great results.
