Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a garage, in front of a white paper backdrop.

Time

It was shot during daytime, in summer. My garage does not have heating and winter here in Canada can get pretty cold. So most of my projects in the nude are shot during summer.

Lighting

I use a special setup for lighting; a passthrough umbrella casting light through a linen sheet suspended from the ceiling. The linen sheet soften the diffusion even more and gives a more natural aspect to the artificial light.

Equipment

It was shot with a Canon EOS 5D MkII. The lens is a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM, focused at 104mm. Exposure at 1/200 sec at f/2.8. ISO at 100. The camera was attached to a tripod and I used a remote trigger to take the shot.

Inspiration

Allison is a beautiful model. It is said that beauty is defined by the eyes and the mouth and I think Allison have them both. She has freckles too that add to the texture of the B&W. I met her at the local gym where she works and she accepted to be part of a project.

Editing

The picture was originally taken in color. I processed it to B&W. There is no retouching but the B&W conversion.

In my camera bag

I do mostly studio shots. I'm used to having 2 light sources, mostly umbrellas or softboxes. A reflector, tripod and a linen sheet. Right now I use a Canon 5D MkII, 2 Sigma prime lens (35mm, 50mm), a Canon 135mm prime and a telephoto (Sigma 70-200). On my camera, I attach a remote and I connect a tablet to its USB connector. When a picture is taken, it is automatically transferred to the tablet for review.

Feedback

First of all, you must control the lighting. Make a lot of tests to get what you want before the shooting day. When working with a model, don't be too directive; instead, ask her to move and try to find the moment where she is the most natural. We are very good to interpret non-verbal and when a model "force" its pose, you will feel it on the photo.. and you definitely don't want that. Don't try to capture acting from her, try to understand what she is and snap that.
