Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken in the 'boot' room. This is one of the rooms that hasn't been finished yet in the renovation of our fort in the Cantal region of France. The boot room is where our chicks lived while they stayed with us - solely because it has one of the only doors in the house that could be shut and protect the chicks against the cat.

Time

Taken during the day but inside a large cardboard box which greatly reduced the ambient light from the windows.

Lighting

Simple off camera flash with a wireless trigger and a cardboard tube snoot hand held above the subject which were constantly moving about.

Equipment

Canon 7DmkIi, wide angle lens, wireless triggers, simple flash unit, cardboard tube and off-cut of kitchen wooden surface. Oh, and a baby chicken...

Inspiration

My friend Ali said I should try some animal portraits. Not sure this is what she had in mind...!

Editing

Darkened the edges, cropped and converted into B/W

In my camera bag

Canon 450D, 50mm lens and a reflector
