Location
This photo was taken was taken in one of the courtyards at my school, Muhlenberg College.Time
My go to time to shoot is sunset and golden hour. It almost always yields great lighting and incredible colors.Lighting
I like to use natural lighting and since it was sunset I was able to capture the soft light on the cupcake and her hands.Equipment
I used in this shot my Canon Rebel T6 with a 50mm 1.8. I used a sparkler instead of a candle to get the festive feeling of a birthday candle and a prism to create the rainbow effect at the bottom.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this because it was my birthday and I wanted to do something fun because of it!Editing
I tend to do a lot of post-processing with my photos. I like to keep my photos bright and colorful so after doing the basic adjustments in Lightroom I take my photos to photoshop where I fine-tuned the colors and to enhance the prism reflection. In my camera bag
My bag is a mess of string lights, sparklers, and other random props that I use to bring my pictures to life. While I usually shoot with the 50mm I bring along my 18-55 and 75-300 just in case.Feedback
If you want to try and do something similar to this you're going to need a lens that you can you to get a shallow depth of field to create depth in the image and a prism. Prisms are super versatile because you can get rainbows, light flares, and reflections with it which can all be used to make something similar to this. Its all about experimenting and figuring out different ways you can use the prism.
