I usually go out photo tracking between 9:00am and 1:00pm. I know that lighting may be better both earlier and much later in the day, but I have have not experienced too many difficulties taking pictures of birds in bright light. In fact, since II typically shoot between 500mm to 600mm which puts my max aperture at F6.3 for my lens, the bright light really helps.Lighting
There were a few clouds in the sky, but not enough to provide any diffused lighting.Equipment
Canon 7D Mark II with Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary version.Inspiration
I am partial to the American Avocets, especially at mating time. Their personalities and behaviors really shine throughout this time. The before and after mating behaviors are especially interesting to me. This picture shows the "after mating" ritual where it is almost like they are saying "I love you".Editing
I typically do post processing in Lightroom. I try to keep a light hand to let the colors and quality of the picture stand on their own. I usually bring down highlights and bring up shadows. Put some sharpening and a little clarity in.In my camera bag
In addition to my camera and lens, the only other thing I bring is a monopod.Feedback
I think so much of what I have experienced is just being at the right place at the right time along with a lot of luck! I know a lot of people who tend to park themselves in one spot and wait for something to happen. I have a hard time staying in one place for hours on end so I tend to move around a lot so I can see what is happening. I may stand in a spot for 30 minutes but after that I am ready to move along. We are all different in what types of pictures we are looking for so there is no right way of getting your pics!
