Location
This was taken at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, CA. This is a fantastic wildlife area in the middle of urban development. It features easy trails along ponds and wooded areas. There is an amazing variety of wildlife to enjoy.Time
Captured this elusive critter about 11:00 in the morning. She is very shy so one has to sort of sneak up on her to get a shot before she scurries out of range or back into the shade.Lighting
She had just come out of the shade into a sunny area of the waterway. My lens likes a lot of light, so it was perfect. One of those right time/right place opportunities.Equipment
I use a Canon 7D Mark II along with a Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens. This was hand held shot.Inspiration
I love to explore the area and discover new birds. The Hooded Merganser is quite an unusual visitor so was quite happy to see her in good light.Editing
Lightroom is my processing tool. Quite easy to use and enables very fine adjustments. In my camera bag
While I have a few lenses, my go to equipment is my trusty Canon 7D Mark II with a Sigma 150-600mm lens. Fantastic combination for all kinds of critters, especially birds that like to keep their distance from us humans. I also have a Canon 70-200mm L that goes with me for critters that are closer in range.Feedback
Just get out and have fun. Practice and positivity is the key. Even if you take 1,000 pictures on an outing, all it takes is just one good shot to make your day.
