Behind The Lens

Location

This was a very experiential moment for me as I am largely a nature and landscape photographer. I made this image in my living room, at night, with no external light source other than the string of LEDs.

Time

This image was made in the evening. I wanted to remove all light sources other than the string of LED lights.

Lighting

The only source of light was a string of artistic LED lights on a wire strand that I purchased at an arts and craft store. I made the image at night and turned off all external lights and ensured the windows were shut. It was important for me to capture the glow of light in the model’s outstretched hands and to try to get the halo of lights to reflect off the model’s eyes - the area of focus for this image.

Equipment

This image was made with a Pentax K-1 full frame dslr. I was using a Pentax FA 77mm f1.8 limited lens. I made this image hand-held, no tripod. The only other piece of equipment was a string of battery-powered LED lights that I purchased at Michael’s, an arts and craft store in Anchorage, AK.

Inspiration

I was inspired to make this image because I wanted to make a portrait at night. I have virtually no training in the use of creative lighting. I had picked up the string of LED lights earlier to have on hand for a photograph project. I liked the soft look of the lights and thought they would frame the subject’s face nicely, without washing out all her details. I was also hoping to capture the reflection of the string of lights in the model’s eyes for an extra punch to the image.

Editing

I processed the image in Adobe PS CC. There wasn’t a lot of processing. I cropped and sharpened the image. I converted the image to black and white using Nik Silver Efex Pro.

In my camera bag

My primary kit consists of a Pentax K-1 body, and my Pentax DFA 24-70mm f2.8. Because I make mostly landscape, nature, and macro images, I round out my kit witty the Pentax DFA 15-30mm f2.8, the DA 200mm f2.8, the Stanton 90mm f2.8 macro lens. The latest lens for my primary kit is the Rokinon 24mm f3.5 tilt shift. I use a number of polarizers and ND lenses, including several 150x150 filters for the NiSi filter system that I use on my 15-30mm lens. I have a Think Tank bag. I also have an extensive collection of vintage Pentax fixed focus lenses to mix things up!

Feedback

I’ve never been focused on investing in lighting systems. I primarily rely on chasing the sun. When I made the Halo image I wanted to keep things simple. When you turn down the lights any lighting system or tool hits center stage. In this case it was a strand of LED lights that I picked up on sale for about $7.
