Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the road right outside my home while little Riley was visiting and playing with my dog Bella. What's really funny is that I tried earlier to take some shots of these two sitting together with the sun behind them, but every time I had them in the right light, they were much more interested in running around and being on the move, so my camera couldn't capture them before they were moving out of the frame. About an hour later they went outside again to play and I followed with my camera ready. Then Riley suddenly pointed her finger at my dog "Bella" and told her to sit! To my surprise Bella sat down and then Riley perfectly sat down right next to her and stayed still in this pose! I was so glad I had my camera ready because I ended up getting several cute shots of them!

Time

It was a beautiful summer evening and a perfect time for soft light with the sun just behind tree tops during golden hour.

Lighting

Both of them were in high energy mode playing and not in sitting mood! It would take a miracle to get them still enough to photograph! And actually I wasn’t the one who got them to sit for this picture! They had heard me ask them to sit there during an earlier shoot, but neither one of them felt like going along with it, so that shoot didn’t work very well. However, this time when we went outside, Riley all of a sudden pointed her finger at Bella and said “sit!”. Bella immediately sat down, then next Riley came and sat right next to her just like you see in the picture!!! Then they both sat there still for me to capture it!!! What a miracle!!! LOL I was so amazed and happy that these two sat so perfectly together and to top it off, it was in beautiful "end of the day" soft light!!! With them facing west into the evening sun as it was going down, it provided a gentle rim light around Riley and Bella. It also created wonderful highlighting down the street in front of them and a soft glow of the sun through the trees. This was a real delight to photograph! Both Riley and my dog Bella are the best of friends so it is always so special to somehow capture their relationship!

Equipment

I used my Canon 6D and Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS II lens. no flash was used

Inspiration

I love images of simple and innocent life moments, and children are the perfect inspiration to find those kind of moments! Their interaction with pets provide endless opportunities to capture images that can warm our heart and put a smile on the face! :) About a year ago I decided to start learning portrait photography and began to shoot a series with children and animals. It has now become one of my favorite things to capture!

Editing

I shot this in raw and started the processing in lightroom. I had underexposed it in camera so in processing I brought up the shadows and highlights. I like to use lightroom to brush areas that I want to bring out more highlights and details and also added a little vignette to bring focus on to the little girl and dog. Then I brought it over to photoshop and added Jessica Drossin actions.

In my camera bag

I use both the Canon T3i and Canon 6D cameras. Both of them are wonderful and I like having the crop sensor and full frame. My main walk around lens is the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L II, and I use it most of the time. I also love using the 70-200mm 2.8L IS II for portraits and people photography! For wide angle shots I shoot with the Canon 10-22. The Canon 50mm 1.8 and Canon 18-55mm are both good all around lenses in my bag. I also have a 430 EX II external speedlite, a reflector and a tripod.

Feedback

My best advice for this type of image is to have your camera with you and ready to shoot when the moment happens. With children you never know when that moment will just appear before your eyes and if you have already got your settings in place, then most likely you can capture it as it unfolds. I think another big key to this is to just follow them and have fun with the whole process!
