Behind The Lens
Location
This image was taken in the zoo in Münster, Germany.Time
It was in the afternoon. The place was crowded.Lighting
The lighting was bright and soft because the ape was sitting in an indoor compound with many windows which acted like giant diffusor and lots of tropical plants which cast lots of soft shadows.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7100 and my Tamron 150-600mm on a tripod.Inspiration
I have taken many pictures of apes before, so I knew they can be very expressive. I zoomed in as far as I could and waited for the ape to perform. The old sack it was using as a blanket added another level of interest.Editing
Obviously, I converted the image to black & white. In my animal portraiture I often darken the background until it becomes completely bright. Here, however, the background was so bright that I decided to go for a white background. In my camera bag
In the zoo, I usually use the equipment mentioned above. Sometimes I also carry a 105mm macro lens as well which can come in handy when I am trying to capture tiny frogs or insects in their small compounds.Feedback
Don't think too much, just shoot. A moment of hesitation can mean that the unique expression or that precious moment is gone. Also, know your DoF at various focal lengths. It is tempting to shoot wide open when the light is weak, but if you do, the animals might have sharp eyes but blurred noses.
