This image was taken at the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany.Time
It was a sunny and beautiful late morning. I had set up my tripod with a friend and we waited for hours for the lions to do something more interesting than sleeping. And they did.Lighting
It was direct bright sunlight, pretty harsh. But in zoos, you don't have much choice and shoot anyway.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 and my Nikon 70-300mm lens.Inspiration
Eye contact with a lion is one of the most intense and inspiring things you can experience in a zoo. I had hoped to get an eye contact shot like this. The rebellious pose and expression was a welcome bonus.Editing
Obviously, I converted the image to black & white and blackened the background. I used the adjustment brush in Lightroom and the control points in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 to achieve this effect.In my camera bag
When I go to the zoo, I only bring my D7100 and my zoom lens which is usually my Tamron 150-600mm. Depending on the zoo I visit, I sometimes also have my 100mm macro lens with me which can come in handy when photographing animals in small compounds or terrariums.Feedback
Be patient but don't wait too long. If in doubt, just shoot. An expression like this never lasts longer than a short moment. If you don't want to miss it, you'd better shoot at the risk of throwing away many images later on.
