Location
This photo was taken in Vesey St. Manhattan NYC, right next to the One World Trade Center. It was during a trip to NYC and Washington DC to visit my best friend, who I haven’t seen for almost 4 years.Time
It was my second day in NYC and I remember waking up very early, because we wanted to discover downtown Manhattan while the streets were still empty. I took the subway to Wall Street and walked down to Battery Park to start off the day with a coffee down at the water. After taking a couple pictures in the streets during sunrise, we got to the One World Trade Center at around 8 AM where I took this picture.Lighting
It was a cloudy November morning, with very soft light. The contrasts between the sky and the buildings came out very strong, due to the fleecy clouds and the low sun.Equipment
I shot this picture with my Nikon D5100 and the 18-105mm kit lens. I didn’t use a tripod or any filters for this shot.Inspiration
Originally I wanted to take pictures of the One World Trade Center as the main subject, but then I saw the perfect structure of the building next to it. The vertical lines seemed to be endless, leading straight into the sky. Using the rule of thirds, I added the One World Trade Center to my composition, to make the picture more recognizable and not just a picture of a random building.Editing
This picture was quite simple to develop. I imported the picture to Adobe Lightroom, took out the saturation, enhanced the contrasts and clarity a little and that was about it.In my camera bag
My standard setup is the Nikon D5100 with the 18-105mm kit lens. The same setup I used to take this picture. It's just very versatile and you can adjust very quickly to the scene. I also have a Sigma 10-20mm, if I need a wider angle for architecture or landscapes and a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 for low light and portraits.Feedback
To capture a picture like this, it doesn’t require a lot of skill or experience, neither much talent in post processing. All you have to do is go out and look at things in various angels. The simplest scene can change completely by just moving around a little.
