Behind The Lens

Location

Taken here on the north shore of Oahu where I live. Ke iki beach is very popular with photographers because of the heavy shore break so close to shore. It is one of my favorite places to shoot. It is a very dangerous wave for swimming but plenty of people still go out.

Time

I knew a good size swell was in happening so I headed out around 8:00 in the morning. I started out shooting at a different location then moved to this one around 9:00. I then walked from Ke iki to Pipeline and shot several photos along the way. This photo was taken around 11:00 am.

Lighting

The lighting is constantly changing depending on the clouds and sometimes rain. It is challenging to get the settings right for this reason. One minute it is bright and sunny and I worry the highlights will be blown out and the next second it will be dark and my settings will be all wrong. This was one of those moments. I still had the shutter speed set to 1/2500 for a sunny shot, and it had just started to go behind a cloud, keeping it light in the foreground and darker in the background

Equipment

No tripod since that can slow me down when a big waves washes in. I shoot right at the shore and literally have to run sometimes to get away from the incoming waves. I had my 7D and EF70-200mm f/2.8 USM

Inspiration

I love to capture the different moods of the ocean and this day had some huge waves up to 25-feet I wanted to capture.

Editing

Slight contrast added and a little clarity. No added color. All in Lightroom

In my camera bag

Canon 7D and EF70-200mm f/2.8 USM. I keep a lens cloth with me and use it frequently to keep the ocean spray off.

Feedback

I suggest checking the tides before heading out to shoot. When you do find a place, take a few moments to check the high tide line to see where the waves will wash up to when a set comes in. It can change drastically, I have seen many people get everything soaked or they get knocked down because they did not pay attention. Keep one eye on the water at all times. Most of all, be safe and enjoy yourself.
