Location
This was taken at Waimea Bay near my home on the north shore of Oahu. It was early in the season for big waves. I had just bought my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom and was learning to use it and was happy to have the chance on the big waves.Time
I usually head out to shoot around 8:00 AM giving me time to pick the location and set up a safe distance away from the high tide line. For shooting waves you need light or the water just looks gray. Too much light blows the highlights out so the best time to shoot is mid morning or late afternoon.Lighting
The sun had just started to shine on the bay but was still low enough to bring out the color of the water.Equipment
This was before I upgraded my camera to a Canon 7D. I had just starting shooting waves and learning how to use a DSLR. I started on a point and shoot and realized it was impossible to get a good shot of the waves that way. This shot was taken with a Canon t2i that I used about a year before getting the 7D. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom really helps to capture close-ups of the waves. I also had my tripod, no flashInspiration
I love to body surf and I am inspired to shoot waves, being literally surrounded by them here in Hawaii. I hope to share my love of the Ocean.Editing
