I took this photo at Cascade Ponds in Banff National Park in Alberta Canada.Time
I'll start out by saying I am not a morning person, but this day I found out why photographers tend to get up early. I woke up early for me and started my day to this area in Banff. I learned that day that you can get the best reflections in calm water early in the morning. I am now more of a morning person. This was taken at about 8:00 A.M. Within about 15 minutes the water was no longer calm, so I got there just in time.Lighting
It was for the most part a gloomy day, however this is the day I learned to be patient as occasionally the sun would peak out through the clouds creating dramatic light and shadows.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon 7D, using EF-S 10-22mm Canon lens using a tripod.Inspiration
I planned my day the night before and wanted some calm water to get a nice reflection. I had seen many photos like that but have never achieved it before. With such beauty all around I was immediately taken with this whole scene and the bridge just topped it off for me.Editing
I normally do the usual post-processing of the RAW files such as contrast, highlight, shadows, color, etc. On this one I had set out to take enough pictures to try out HDR if I needed to. So this is a combination of 4 images of different exposures using the Automated HDR Merge in Photoshop. From there I increased the contrast, adjusted the highlights and shadows just a bit, then added some color saturation to create an image as close to my vision of the actual scene that I could. In my camera bag
Since I took this photo I have added to my camera bag. I now carry a Canon 7D and a Canon 5D3. The lens you will find in my bag are all Canon, EF 24-105mm, EF 16-35mm, EF 100-400mm, and EF-S 10-22mm for use on the 7D only. I carry a tripod 90% of the time and carry all my filters with me. Those include a variable ND filter, along with a set of square Graduated ND filters, and of course you can't take landscape photos without a polarizer.Feedback
I love to travel to National Parks and take in the amazing beauty that is being preserved for us to enjoy. It is an inspiration to me. For this particular scene I learned you need to get up early for the calmest of waters if you want perfect reflections. The slightest breeze will cause ripples in the water and whereas that can be great in itself, my goal here was to get a perfect reflection. So get up early and get out there. Also be very patient as the weather can change drastically very quickly. Cloudy days often times turn out to have the most dramatic lighting you can imagine. Sometimes you have to even wait through the rain, but if you are rewarded with great lighting, it makes it all worth it. If you are going to process multiple images using HDR, definitely use a tripod. Best of all don't forget to look around the camera and enjoy the beauty around you. I tend to get so caught up in getting the shot and that is a good thing, but now after I get the shot I sit and just enjoy soaking in the scene, and sometimes I am rewarded even more with a change of light. Patience is key!
