EFFICIENT use of animal power is the very basis of the Mennonite-Amish system of agriculture. They have found it possible to drive teams 20 miles per day in a ten hour day (one hour of travel to and one from field) on various farm implements and to maintain this rate week after week. In this photo if all goes well on this day he will accomplish twenty miles of productive work which equates to 5.6 acres plowed.. The advantage of the seven horse hitch as configured four in back and three up front is the fact only two horses are required to walk on plowed land. The strongest, toughest two horses, best able to withstand the work, are put on the plowed land and they will keep pace with the others so that no slackening in mileage per day will result.

Thanks! I just noticed that one horse is not paying attention to the verbal commands, that is probably why it has been harnessed between two other horses. Thanks for the "TOP Choice" peer recognition.

You are so very right, the multiple hitch is not often used today to plow or combine. Most often people will see a multiple hitch pulling a beer wagon on parade or a big fifth wheel wagon at a fair.

Marvelous perspective, great capture and respective of the Amish by not showing the farmer's face. Well done.

I am surprised you were able to get a picture. The Amish in Lancaster, Pa. do NOT want their pictures taken. I don't want to offend them, so I never get any good shots of them.

I did honor this tradition by not showing his face in the photo I selected to post in my gallery. I thank you for your sensitivity and making sure you do not offend them with unsolicited photos etc..........

It does take the horse power to pull two blades uphill. The wonderful thing about this area in Indiana they do not have to contend with stones etc. Thanks for the "Absolute Materpiece" peer recognition.

I love heavy horses .....It is wonderful seeing them plough. In England they have ploughing contests in some areas .I went to one years ago.Loved it. I didn't have a camera then....Voted ..k

The two that are walking in the plowed furrow really have their tugs tight, these probably are the strongest two horses out of the seven.
