Behind The Lens

Location

This is in the Island in The Sky district of Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah. It is an overlook in the Willow Flats campground called the Green River Overlook. From this perch the next level down, notice the road, is 1000 feet below. The bottom of the canyon where the river is is another 1000 feet below. It is quite breathtaking!!

Time

It was a sunset shot. Just as the sun was sitting on the horizon camera right.

Lighting

The lighting was a can't miss opportunity but the challenge was the wind blowing right into my face as I was setting up the shot. I actually took my belt off of my pants and tied it thru the fence there around the tripod to keep it in place. The wind gusts were unbelievable! This image was so amazing I was ready to do anything to make it happen!!

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II. I used a 17-40mm lens. Induro C313 tripod with the Really Right Stuff ball head #B55. I always use a shutter release as well.

Inspiration

The entire Canyonlands National Park inspires me. From the north district called The Island in The Sky to the entirely unique south district called the Needles District and the White Rim Road which is in the "middle layer" of this awe inspiring location.

Editing

I use Lightroom 5 for all of my imagery. Basic processing including white balance, density and shadow and highlight enhancements. I also use Photoshop for intimate adjustments like deep shadow details and highlight control and manipulation.

In my camera bag

I use the Canon 5d Mark II cameras, lens consisting of a 15mm, 17-40mm, 24-70mm, 70-200 and my favorite 100mm macro. I use an Induro C313 tripod, Really Right Stuff B55 ball head, wirelesss and cable shutter releases, polarizer and ND filters. Camera cases from Think Tank and f-Stop are my favorites.

Feedback

Being in the right place at the right time is so important. This view is stunning all day but without the most dramatic lighting it is just another postcard shot. Anticipating the sunset or sunrise and placing yourself at the best spot for that gorgeous lighting is key. Patience is also a factor as sometimes the clouds may interfere but at the last moment....ahhhhhh!!!
