Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Jigokudani Snow Monkeys Park, where the Japanese Macaque monkeys live free and come down to play, feed and take a bath in the natural hot springs.

Time

We started hiking up to the Snow Monkey Park and this photo was probably taken around mid-day in natural light.

Lighting

No flash was used for this photo, it's all natural lighting. I really like how the surrounding nature was reflected in the Macaque eyes.

Equipment

A handheld photo with the Sony a6300 and 18-105 mm lens. An excellent gear pair for travelling around Japan. This photo was taken at 105mm.

Inspiration

I love the fact that the Monkeys aren't in a zoo, but roam freely and come to the springs to bath and enjoy themselves and the fact that you could get really close and almost interact with them.

Editing

This photo didn't require a lot of post-processing. Only a few tweaks in Lightroom and Luminar.

In my camera bag

For this trip around Japan, I travelled very light, only with my Sony a6300 and the 18-105 lens. A perfect setup to travel light and still be able to capture almost everything I wanted. During 3 weeks I captured more than 1000 photographs and videos with this gear.

Feedback

If you are visiting the Jigokudani Snow Monkeys Park, be sure to be there well in time for feeding and have a few hours to spare. You will not regret it as the Monkeys are all around and will give you many opportunities to wonderful shots. I can really recommend the park, one of many amazing places in Japan and truly a highlight of the trip.
