Nice job taking the mundane and creating a story, classical lighting, nice framing, leading lines, foreground interest, and the red (complimentary color) jacket helps bring attention to the subject. And best of all it doesn't use the boring beginners comp of the "rules" of thirds. Congrats on winning

Great composition. Love it when people put together elements of "ordinary" environment and compose them so well as to make them a piece of art. Shows a special ability to not only look but to "see" also. Thanks for capturing and sharing such images.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot in the afternoon, on a mid-winter day, at Preserve and Gather, a well lit coffee shop, in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle, USA.

Time

Everyday, on my way home from work, It has become my routine,to stop at this little coffee shop, for a cup of coffee. I noticed that the afternoon light, bathed the stenciled wall, through the large windows. It was both, mesmerizing and beautiful. Soon, I was packing my camera, to the coffee shop...

Lighting

The lighting is natural.

Equipment

This image was taken with a Voightlander 12 mm f/5.6 lens, mounted to aSony a7r2 camera. The Voigtlander 12 mm lens has an ultra wide...121 degree depth of field, In order to compensate for the ultra wide depth of field, I staged the foreground of the image, with my coffee a chocolate chip cookie, and my lens cap pulling the width and depth of this image together,

Inspiration

The light has always been my inspiration. The way that the light flooded into this space, illuminating the stenciled wall, was really quite spectacular. The man in the corner, working on his computer, just happened to have a red jacket slung over the back of his chair. I've always thought, that his presence, pulled the image and the story together.

Editing

I used a post processing program on this image, called Aurora HDR 2017. I adjusted white balance, to enhance the golden wall stencil. My approach to post processing is is that sometimes, "Less is more".

In my camera bag

The one standard item, always packed in my bag is my camera, a Sony a7r2. Most of the time, I shoot with manual lenses. In the bottom of my bag, I like to pack a Voigtlander ultra wide 10 mm f/5.6... I also carry a 21 mm f/2.8 Zeiss Loxia in my bag. Another lens, that's always present in my camera bag, is the APO Lanthar 65 mm f/2 Voigtlander lens, that is dual purpose, having both macro and portrait capabilities. It's an incredibly sharp lens. When it comes to a standard lens, I usually reach for my 40 mm f/1.2 Voigtlander Nokton. It offers me the added dimension of speed, though I rarely ever need it. Additionally, I alway carry, both 3 and 6 stop ND filter, in 52, 58, 67 mm. When it comes to my tripod, I have no excuses, it lives in the trunk of my car.

Feedback

Light can be rather fleeting, if you want to capture the light, I'd suggest that you alway pack your camera. I think of myself as a landscape photographer, but I look to capture the light, wherever I find it. I've been known to drive through the night, in order to capture the morning light. Photography, is all about composition and light. You need to able to clearly see the image and its composition, before you push the shutter... Light can change in a moment.
