Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Flagler Beach, Florida, north of Daytona. I had no idea the pier existed before arriving there, it was a "gotta stop here" sighting on my way down the coast.

Time

I had timed my arrival at the coast to be able to watch the sunrise. I only hoped I could also find a suitable place to capture a few snapshots. Turned out my timing was perfect when I encountered the Flagler Beach fishing pier.

Lighting

The intermittent breaks in the cirrus cloud cover helped create the early morning, eye-opening mood. The partial sky cover also helped filter the harsh morning sun and reduce its reflection on the ocean.

Equipment

I used my quick-shoot Sony NEX with its standard wide angle lens to capture this. I remember using a walkway railing to steady the shot.

Inspiration

Everything came together for this shot - the fishing pier, sunrise and cirrus waves of cloud cover. I'm glad I happened upon the setting, I couldn't have planned it better. The pier was actually missing some of its length due to damage from a hurricane only months earlier, which added interest for me.

Editing

No RAW images were used. I made only minor adjustments to exposure, contrast and saturation.

In my camera bag

Sony NEX-f3, standard wide angle lens and zoom lens, various filters, small tripod. That's about it! I like to travel light. I plan to upgrade soon, but maintaining that light weight will be important to me.

Feedback

You can plan as best you can, but be open to surprise conditions and settings. The fun is to recognize when and where they arrive and in deciding how best to frame and capture them. Dawn and dusk really are the best natural lighting conditions, but there are creative ways to shoot nearly any time of day.
