Behind The Lens

Location

I love bleeding heart as a spring burst of color. This is one I planted several years ago in a mostly shaded flower bed around my home and it continues to produce beautiful blooms year after year.

Time

Nearing the end of the day, the flower bed in which it resides gets dappled sunlight exposure through a stately hard maple less than a stone's through away. I like to head out during this time to capture the dancing sunrays on various parts of my yard and garden. It's amazing the some of the images you can memorialize at twilight.

Lighting

Twilight! It's all about the early evening, setting sun, time of day. It's a soft light that really enhances most colors and defines lines and shadows. It's like an automatic contrast and saturation filter!

Equipment

This was shot with an older model Sony NEX-f3, most likely with my 55-210mm zoom lens, no flash or other enhancements.

Inspiration

I'm always inspired by blooming plants around my home. The trick is capturing them with the right lighting, background, exposure and composition to make them interesting and intriguing. It's not an easy task, but once you have it, even a dandelion can be amazing.

Editing

I'm not very accomplished at post-processing, unfortunately. I dabble with it at times, but often I feel like I don't have the time to learn all the ins and outs. The only thing I did with this shot was crop it a bit to remove unwanted peripheral distractions and to centralize the subject.

In my camera bag

I like to keep my equipment bag light to carry so I have only a couple of lenses like a wide-angle 18-55mm and a zoom 55-210mm Sony E-mount to compliment my Sony NEX-f3. Those along with a few filters and a macro ring are about the extent of it. Occasionally I'll bring a tripod if I'm looking to do some longer exposures.

Feedback

You don't have to go far to find a great shot. But, you have to be willing to commit some time to exploring things you wouldn't normally take heed of and to finding the right lighting and compositions. Take lots of photos, they're easy to delete. However, you should make note of your camera settings and conditions also so that you have a chance of repeating those amazing captures! Most of all, don't let yourself get discouraged. Each shot produces the opportunity to improve your skills.
