Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at our local studio which I was given access to for a couple of hours. Just a basic studio with basic accessories and light...

Time

In the evening, when studio was free from visitors...

Lighting

The lighting was as simple as possible. In order to get away from technical complications and concentrate on emotions. If I remember right, one softbox above the model and maybe a reflector

Equipment

I am a big fan of Sony cameras. That time I used a prime lens - that is, Sony SAL 85/2.8 on A7 camera. It is a simple but great combination which I enjoy using for portraits.

Inspiration

Portrait's best quality, for me, is when it "lives". When it is emotional, inspiring, "breathing life". And I planned it to be an emotional, live and sensual close-up. I picked up a great model... That is, she is very beautiful and freckles added even more to it. But, you know, you should not only capture model's looks... If you're able to catch their emotions, soul, mood, personality... That's the primary objective!

Editing

I've learned not to over-process photos! If you do it too much, you somehow kill the spirit of the person. Just feel where to stop with photoshopping :) Sometimes, I forget to stop and regret that later! In this photo, I decided to go to BW to better show emotion. I did some cleaning, then added contrast, vignetting, and noise. So, editing was pretty basic there.

In my camera bag

Oh, it depends. In studio, I normally take two cameras, one crop-sensor with zoom lens to make basic shots. And the main camera is full frame with a prime lens. Also I take flash (just in case), a couple of spare lenses, batteries, and some other minor accessories. I think it is better and faster to work with two cameras rather than with one and change lenses constantly.

Feedback

I think there are two problems photographers face when they try to take an emotional portrait. First, it's hard to make your mode feel free and relaxed. And second, you are not relaxed yourself! Because, you know, you must control your camera, observe your subject, and so many other difficulties... Sometimes, I start to panic when something is going wrong! Here is the thing that works very good: just forget about your camera, poses, lighting, etc. Enjoy doing what you do. Talk and communicate with your subject. Stop giving orders to them. Just be nice. Just smile. Have fun and take photos! Surprisingly enough, it really works ;)
