Behind The Lens

Location

This, like a lot of my photos, was taken in one of our paddocks. Most of my work is actually photographing equestrian events, but there's always interesting things happening in the background that you don't want to miss too!

Time

This was a very sociable late morning shot!

Lighting

With the sun high and behind these two, I waited for them to look up enough to get gentle light on the faces. All whilst lying full length on the floor myself and hoping they didn't see me and move!

Equipment

Very basic here - just my trusty old Nikon D5000...

Inspiration

In the lead up to our daughter's third birthday, a friend was looking for a photo to put on top of a cake for her. My mission was to find one...

Editing

Very little here - other than brighten up the shadows and a minor crop.

In my camera bag

For big horse events, snacks and drinks! My kit is actually very limited at the moment - Nikon D5000, Tamron 18-270 zoom, 50mm prime and a couple of filters, spare cards etc. I wanted to really understand a basic camera and lenses before I let myself upgrade, but I have a few things on my shopping list!

Feedback

For kids and animals, always get down to their level. I prefer unposed shots, unless you have someone old enough to understand! But the main thing is always keeping your eyes open, and camera ready...
