Behind The Lens
Location
Arizona in the Sonoran Desert north of Phoenix.Time
Early morning, the sun had just crested the horizon.Lighting
The light was coming from the right and color temps were quite warm as they often are first thing in the morning.Equipment
NIKON D800E, AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm Lens with only a UV filter on it. Hand held.Inspiration
Where I was standing was serendipidous. I had been woken up a few moments before from a deep sleep by a relative who thought I would enjoy photographing the balloons launching in the area. She was right, but I wasn't really very prepared. I just grabbed the camera with whatever lens it had on it to start shooting. It turned out that I had more time than I thought because there were many balloons launching down the valley and I was able to spend about an hour photographing them as the floated by. I forget where this particular image came in that time period.Editing
This image has been adjusted heavily. There was a lot of haze in the atmosphere making the background hazy and uninteresting. I tone mapped the image and added contrast and a little saturation to get the results that you see here.In my camera bag
NIKON D800E, Olympus Stylus Tough, NIKKOR Lenses: 16mm Fisheye, 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle, 28-300mm Zoom, 50mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 105mm Micro, Sigma 150-600mm Zoom. I have an array of NDs and ND Grads along with color filters on a Cokin mounting system. Manfroto tripod with a Benro Ball Head.Feedback
No matter how much you prepare and plan a shoot there are times when good opportunities just show up and you have to grab whatever is available as far as equipment is concerned. There is a saying that I've learned in recent years "f/8 and be there." It helps a great deal if you know the camera and lens well. Try to keep in mind composition and the other issues involved in making an image what I call "Wallable". Question yourself is that something I would like to see hanging on my wall?
