Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken near Schöningen, Germany. I wanted to take some photos of the Paläon museum. When I arrived, we had these great, dramatic clouds. I saw the alley nearby and liked the string of trees, so I made a quick stop, took a couple of photos and drove on to the museum.

Time

It was early afternoon (about 3pm). I met with a fellow photographer from a photo forum, to go scouting for a small photo tour with some friends. When we saw the clouds, we decided to go to Paläon museum, as it is a modern building with a reflective surface (https://www.viewbug.com/photo/72549803) which would look interesting with all those clouds.

Lighting

It looked like we might get a rain shower, but luckily, we just got these great dramatic clouds without getting wet. So I just took a picture of the scene before me, perfectly lit by mother nature ...

Equipment

I used an Olympus E-M1 with the 12-40/2.8 lens @12mm for this shot. Handheld without any extra equipment, as this shot was more of a quick 'drive-by-shooting' on the way to the main location.

Inspiration

I love clouds, as they can add some drama to a picture. When I saw the tree line, I just wanted to put these man made straight line of trees against the chaotic, natural structure of the clouds.

Editing

I mapped the picture to black and white and increased the contrast a bit, but that's all

In my camera bag

A few years ago I switched from a full frame DSLR to the micro four thirds system, as I prefer the smaller size and much lower weight of the system (esp. when you have several lenses). My current camera is an Olympus E-M1 Mk. II. The 12-40 is still one of my mostly used lenses, but depending on where I go, I might take some of my other lenses with me: The Olmpus 8mm/1.8 fisheye, 20mm/1.7, 25mm/1.8, 45mm/1.8, 50-200mm/2.8-3.5, 60mm/2.0 Macro...

Feedback

This shot was basically a byproduct. I wanted to take some other shots, but when I saw this scene, I just made a little detour get this composition. So always keep your eyes open for unexpected opportunities (and have a camera at hand. The greatest camera is of no use if you do not have it with you ...)
