Interesting theme, the babe from the sea. I was drawn to the photo by the green and yellow blanket. I made a similar onewith same green and yellow stripes for a baby boy.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio. A couple had responded to an invitation, sponsored through our web site for a infant photography session, after receiving their special gift from God to enhance their family. What a blessing for us to have them, and their new son in our home studio.

Time

We tried to set up the photo session just prior to mid day sun, in anticipation of really good natural light to seep through the large windows that we have. But, as things sometimes happen, the day turned out to be quite gloomy and very flat light. But good photography always has back-up plans for uncontrolled conditions, to still get the shot you are looking for. And on some occasions the plan 'B' or even 'C' turns out to be 'the one'.

Lighting

Our plan 'B' was what captured this great image. We closed the drapes, and brought out the soft boxes. Two small soft boxes on each side of the infant setting, set back a few extra feet than we normally would for standard portraits and used the key-light high and strong to help with the hi-lights and shadows. This created the feel we were looking for.

Equipment

My wife owns a Canon 60D, and I have a Canon 70D. We use these Cameras on a regular basis for landscape, wildlife and nature photography, but decided this year we would invest in a Canon 5D Mark lll for use in studio portraiture. Our 5D had proven many times that we had made a very good choice in our future, for in-studio photography. For this infant image, The 5D Mark lll and 3 medium size soft boxes, gave us exactly what we were looking for in our photo session.

Inspiration

Prior to our infant photo sessions, my wife and I had spent a lot of hours watching 'you tube' videos of several different photographers who specialize in this field of portraiture. And I must say, there certainly is some very talented photographers out there. They inspired us greatly with their gift of talent. These videos posted by photographers in this field, are truly a learning experience as a base, but everyone must have their own way to express their own creativity to stand out.

Editing

We did do post processing on the image, using 'Adobe Lightroom 6'. Basic adjustments and darkening the shadows, really brought the whole image together as we wanted the image to be seen. Soft and relaxing, but with texture and feel. But achieving most of it in camera, in RAW format, is what makes a photographer a photographer.

In my camera bag

Equipment that we use in studio, is the Canon 5D Mark lll , 3- medium soft boxes, 2- 300 watt strobe lights, and a LED pro light on a stand for subject and back ground separation. When we are out in the field chasing after landscape and wildlife we use the Canon 60D and 70D, wide angle lenses, and 600mm telephoto lens. and of course, extra charged batteries because being prepared is everything.
