Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on a whale tour out of Anchorage, Alaska

Time

Mid morning.

Lighting

Just got lucky.

Equipment

Nikon D3100, lens was a Nikon DX 55-200mm.

Inspiration

These whales were doing what they call "Bubble Feeding". A group of whales blow bubbles around a school of fish, creating a donut of air. Then the whales dive under and up through the donut hole catching the trapped fish in their mouth. It's rare to see this in nature and our guide was kind enough to follow them so that we could photograph it several times.

Editing

Always crank up the saturation a little. I only had a 200mm telephoto, so I cropped the picture around the whales, so you could feel like your closer to them.

In my camera bag

Just my trusty Nikon D3100, a standard lens & a telephoto. Then there's the usual lens cleaner, sun tan lotion, and spare battery/memory cards.

Feedback

Shoot as many frames as you can! This is a unique opportunity, take advantage of it. The whales breach rather quickly, then fall slowly back into the water. You want to catch them in several different "poses".
