Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo up at Tioga Lake as I was driving out of Yosemite over to the eastern Sierra Nevada on the Tioga Pass road back on May 4, 2015.

Time

Stopped at this lake around 4:45 PM. I was fortunate that the clouds were magnificent and the lake was still mostly frozen over.

Lighting

I used natural lighting. The light coming through the clouds I believed to be sufficient for this shot.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7100, Tokina 11-20 lens and the camera was handheld.

Inspiration

Just happened to be at the right place at the right time! As I was driving down Tioga Pass, I realized that the lake was very low for this time of the year and the ice wasn't quite melted yet. With the clouds up above, was hoping to get a reflection of the mountains and the clouds. Got lucky with this one!

Editing

I did use ViewNX2 and Photoshop on this image, but I don't remember precisely all that I did unfortunately. I know I used Shadow/Highlight in PS to lighten up the water.

In my camera bag

Of course, my Nikon D7100! Then I have the Tokina 11-20 for my wide angle shots, the Nikkor 16-85 as my all around lens, and the Nikkor 70-300 lens. I also have my Manfrotto tripod that comes in very handy!

Feedback

For me, any shot up in the mountains will be spectacular. Some shots you really have to wait for. Others, like this shot, can be impromptu. Just have to know which shots you have to be patient for and keep your eyes and mind open for the impromptu shots so you don't miss them!
