This is just amazing. It reminds me of the final episode of Black Adder Goes Forth.

If you were the commander of this assault what would your assessment have been? It looks great but in reality what is wrong?

It’s a posed photo during a promotion course, not a slide for tactical assault training, thanks anyway.

Location
This was taken in the south of England, on a Military training Camp. I was the Squadron Sgt for a promotion cadre, which gave me a bit of free time to get my camera out now and then.Time
So, this was during their exercise phase. At this point they are drained, and tired from lack of sleep, but still have to be able to react to situations as they arise, this was about 2000hrs just after a serial, so they were still full of adrenaline.Lighting
The lighting consisted of 7 canon EX420mk2 speedlites on stands in a horseshoe shape in front of them. All set to half power and triggered by an ST-E2 on my camera.Equipment
This was a canon 5Dmk3, hand held, I didn't need a tripod due to the lighting which freezes motion.Inspiration
The guys normally get a basic stand there in a row and don't smile course photo, but I thought I'd try something a bit different. I love to do action shots, and also love to do 'big portraits', so this just popped into my head as we were shooting.Editing
Yes, I added a slight Matt, darkened it slightly with curves, added a bit of darkness to the bottom corners, and painted on a high pass filter over detail such as eyes etc.In my camera bag
I have progressed slightly from when I took that, so now I have 2x5Dmk3, canon lenses-35 1.4, 50 1.4, and a 70-200 2.8. I normally carry my EX580mk2, and 2xEX420mk2's. Also the ST-E2 trigger. The cameras are carried on a duel black rapid harness.Feedback
Well, it isn't really hard to do funnily enough, as long as you are using speed lights, and there isn't much ambient light around you won't get motion blur even if you stop down to 1/60. I kept the light high up on the stands pointing down to add a bit of atmosphere, and also had a guy off camera waving a big stick around to which I had tied a smoke grenade, hence the foggy look. Just make sure your subjects are feeling the mood you want to portray, if that means winding them up a bit, then do that lol!
