Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Le Mans racing circuit and it was the first time I'd used a camera more advanced than a "point & shoot" and I was just getting to grips with it. I was lucky enough to win the camera in a competition, along with a weekend in France, in the company of various professional photographers from around the world. This was the second day I'd been using it.

Time

We'd travelled from Paris on the train for a track day at the circuit, and it was to be a crash course in action photography. Of course it was a wonderful day, but the circuit's car park was equally interesting, and that was where this photograph was taken. It was early afternoon with the sun beating down, in fact the weather was glorious.

Lighting

There's not too much to say. The sun was high in the sky, so the shadows were small, but the angle of the sun helped get the detail in the reflection in the paintwork on the car. I'd actually got down to tie my shoelace, and thought "that would make a GREAT photograph."

Equipment

The photograph was shot with a Samsung NX300 mirrorless camera and standard 18-55mm kit lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

As mentioned above, it was an inspirational trip all round. I think this was more of a "right place, right time" moments. Had the light been slightly different, or I hadn't had to tie my shoelace I may well have missed it. I saw a moment and thought it needed capturing, it's as simple as that.

Editing

The image is pretty much straight out of the camera. The only thing I did was to convert the image to black & white. The car is actually red and I believe there's another photo of it somewhere on my profile page.

In my camera bag

The mirrorless camera has since been sold on. My main camera is a Canon 7D Mk II these days, and I use a Canon EOS 550D (Rebel t2i) as a back up, My lenses are all EF-S apart from my EF 50mm F1.8, as I'm still building my equipment collection. I use the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 USM and EF-S 55-250 STM most, and I also have an EF-S 10 - 18mm and still use my 18 - 55mm STM kit lens as I have several sets of filters for it.I also have a couple of speed lights, gels, reflectors, rain covers, spare batteries and a tripod.

Feedback

I guess the most important thing you can do is explore the world around you. You may think there's nothing interesting there, but a different point of view can reveal something that you may have missed initially. Explore your camera too of course, finding the right settings produces great photos, but getting it wrong can produce some interesting results too, so don't be afraid to ignore the rules sometimes.
